Red Sox Foundation gives $50,000 to local nonprofits

Florida Weekly – June 23-29, 2021

The Boston Red Sox Foundation recently presented two local non-profits with $25,000 each.

“Due to COVID, we were not able to host annual fundraisers for the Lee health Foundation and the Boys & Girls Club of Lee County this past year,” said Jay Fandel, senior manager, Florida Ballpark Operations Boston Red Sox. “We have partnered with both of these nonprofits for years and after such a tough year, our foundation wanted to continue our support through these donations.” Each year during Spring Training, the Boston Red Sox Foundation supports the Lee Health Foundation through its Boston Red Sox Celebrity Classic Golf Tournament, Tee Party Dinner and Auction and Dinner on the Diamond as well as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lee County’s Evening with the Red Sox. For more than two decades, the Red Sox have helped these organizations raise millions of dollars for their programs.

“Fortunately, since it’s been such a long-standing tournament partnering with the Boston Red Sox and The Forest Country Club, donors and community residents were willing to support this year even without an event,” said Katy Martinez, director of development, Lee Health Foundation. “We’re so thankful for the $25,000 donation from the Boston Red Sox Foundation, as well as the many generous supporters that helped us raise over $250,000 this year. TI1e funds raised will help bring a pediatric neurosurgery program to Golisano Children’s Hospital. Brenda Lanza, director, membership and marketing for The Forest Country Club, said members arc looking forward to the tournament returning next year. The Forest has hosted the golf tournament for 27 years.

We are so thankful to the Boston Red Sox for giving back to their community while promoting the importance of our youth living a healthy and active lifestyle,” said Denise Gergley, CEO if the Boys & Girls Club of Lee County. “Our members are extremely grateful for this generous donation and the Red Sox continued support.” The Red Sox Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and the official team charity of the Boston Red Sox. The foundation’s primary focus locally is in serving the health, education, recreation and social service needs of children and families across Southwest Florida.
